Lyon Silk Merchant-Manufacturer Tradition

La Fabrique Lyonnaise

The Lyon fabrique — the merchant-manufacturer system that organized Lyon silk production from the 16th to early 20th century. The fabricant did not weave but commanded the entire production chain: commissioning designs; managing mise en carte; distributing work to canuts across the Croix-Rousse; negotiating with raw material suppliers; and selling to international clients. The fabrique knowledge — understanding how to read a market; commission a program; and assemble the fragmented production chain into a coherent quality output — is itself a tacit knowledge system that is disappearing as the traditional fabrique model is replaced by vertically integrated ateliers.
