CRAFT Intelligence Brief
A focused research brief on techniques, materials, cultures, emerging applications and relevant practitioners around a client question.
by Naked River
Research and advisory that turns craft knowledge into strategic opportunity.
WHAT WE DO
Most innovation research begins with markets, consumers and competitors. CRAFT adds another source of intelligence: the accumulated knowledge inside the way things have been made.
We search the Depository for techniques relevant to a client question, identify the tacit principles hidden inside them, and translate those principles into contemporary opportunities.
CRAFT Advisory is run by Naked River, a Singapore-based brand innovation consultancy.
The object is evidence. The intelligence is the opportunity.
WAYS TO WORK WITH CRAFT
A focused research brief on techniques, materials, cultures, emerging applications and relevant practitioners around a client question.
Identify 5–10 craftspeople or techniques suited to a brand, product, hospitality or cultural project, with rationale and introductions where possible.
A focused 2–3 hour session using CRAFT to explore how traditional making could inform products, experiences, spaces or storytelling.
FOR MAKERS
Brands and hotels increasingly want to work with makers. Few collaborations are set up to last. We help craftspeople and workshops prepare: pricing and costing, capacity and lead times, contracts and the protection of their designs and knowledge, and a portfolio a brand can understand.
Where specialist support is needed, we work with partner organizations.
Collaboration readiness is funded by the commissioning brand or by cultural and development partners, so makers do not pay to be ready.
HOW AN INTELLIGENCE BRIEF WORKS
Start with a live business, design or cultural question.
Interrogate the archive across techniques, regions and materials.
Identify the tacit intelligence inside process, sequence and judgment.
Turn those principles into contemporary strategic possibilities.
Prioritize concepts that can be piloted, commissioned or developed.
QUESTIONS WE CAN INVESTIGATE
We search the archive for relevant techniques, principles, practitioners and opportunities that can help answer it.
Use techniques, materials and tacit knowledge to shape local identity, guest experience and collaboration without decorative theming.
Translate joinery, bending, weaving and surface traditions into distinctive products and construction principles.
Draw on preparation, layering, timing and touch to inspire new beauty rituals, formats and experiences.
Leverage Malaysian craft knowledge to inform programming, maker collaboration, food, objects, space and participation.
Apply wrapping, folding, binding and joining traditions to more meaningful, material-efficient packaging.
Turn processes, tools and maker relationships into physical experiences built around participation and discovery.
SEE WHAT A BRIEF LOOKS LIKE
Each CRAFT Intelligence Brief cites the archive records behind every idea, states how strong the evidence is, and proposes a first pilot. These are sample briefs.

WHY CRAFT
CRAFT is built around documented techniques rather than generic trend signals. Every record states its source quality and verification status, from desk-researched to practitioner-verified, so you can see how far each claim has been tested, and evidence, interpretation and possibility stay distinct. When a claim fails a check, we correct the record and every brief that cites it.
“Never borrow the appearance before understanding the intelligence.”
This moves a brief beyond mood boards and cultural reference toward principles derived from how people actually make, judge, repair and transform material.
