THE INITIATIVE

What Can Stories of Making Tell Us About a Changing World?

Craft in cinema is rarely just about making an object. It can reveal the disappearance of a livelihood, the survival of cultural memory, the pressures of industrialization, or the reinvention of tradition by a new generation.

CRAFT Frames is a curated film initiative centered on fiction in which making plays a meaningful narrative role. Selected documentaries provide cultural and historical context, while conversations and live encounters reconnect what appears on screen with the knowledge carried by real hands.

WHY CINEMA?

Cinema Preserves More Than Objects

An archive can document a technique. Cinema can reveal the world around it: the rhythm of work, the relationship between master and apprentice, the social status of the maker, and the forces transforming a community.

Through fiction and documentary, CRAFT Frames approaches making as a lens through which to understand broader cultural change.

01Making as narrativeCraft is integral to the story, rather than decorative scenery.
02Making as evidenceMaterials and gestures reveal place, identity, and social history.
03Making in transitionWhat is being lost, adapted, or reinvented.

THE CURATORIAL APPROACH

Fiction at the Center

“Documentary explains.
Fiction allows us to inhabit.”

The core program is fiction-led: stories in which acts of making carry emotional, social, or symbolic weight. A smaller documentary strand adds context through portraits of craftspeople, communities, and endangered practices.

01

Films

The emotional and social worlds surrounding making. The primary curatorial program.

02

Documentaries

The people, histories, and techniques behind those worlds. A contextual counterpoint.

BEYOND THE SCREEN

Film Is the Beginning of the Encounter

01

Films

Curated fiction and documentary screenings exploring making, material culture, and social transformation, with craft at the heart of the story.

THE STORIES WE SEEK

When Making Becomes Part of the Story

CRAFT Frames looks for films in which making is not simply a visual backdrop, but a force within the narrative—shaping identity, livelihood, memory, relationships, or resistance to change.

01

Knowledge at risk

Skills threatened by industrialization, displacement, or the disappearance of practitioners.

02

Making and identity

Craft as an expression of personal, cultural, and collective belonging.

03

Generations of knowledge

The relationships between masters, apprentices, families, and changing forms of transmission.

04

Tradition reinvented

Makers negotiating continuity, contemporary design, and emerging technologies.

The final program will be developed with host and curatorial partners, responding to place, audience, and cultural context.

PROPOSED FIRST EDITION

Conceived in Singapore.
Designed to Travel.

CRAFT Frames is being developed in Singapore as a platform through which local and international stories of making can be placed in dialogue.

A proposed Singapore edition would foreground the city’s multicultural making traditions, changing trades, and contemporary craft practices, connecting them with comparable stories from Asia and the wider world.

Possible components

  • Singapore-related films and documentaries
  • Invited local craftspeople
  • Participatory demonstrations and workshops
  • Conversations on heritage, design, and changing livelihoods
  • Digital encounters with relevant CRAFT archive records

THE CONNECTION TO CRAFT

From Watching to Discovering

CRAFT Frames extends the mission of the World Craft Depository into cinema and public experience. Screenings lead audiences back to the materials, gestures, and embodied intelligence from which they began.
