Javanese Body Scrub Preparation (Lulur)

lulur

Preparation and application of lulur, a body scrub of finely ground rice with turmeric and spices (ginger, cinnamon), nuts and sandalwood in some recipes, mixed with water and jasmine oil into a granular paste. Originating as a purifying ritual for princesses before their weddings in Central Java’s palaces, it was traditionally given daily for 40 days before the wedding. The paste is applied, left to dry, gently rubbed off to lift dead skin, then rinsed — traditionally followed by a yogurt rub and a flower-petal bath.
