Paper de Trapo Català
The hand making of rag paper (paper de trapo) in the Catalan paper mill tradition — one of the oldest paper production traditions in western Europe, with Catalan paper mills documented from 1282 (the Xàtiva mill in Valencia being the first European paper mill, 1056). The Catalan tradition uses cotton or linen rag as raw material, broken down in a stamping mill (molí de masses), formed on a wire mold, pressed, and dried. Catalan rag paper is the primary archival paper in European collections — its longevity (1000+ years) is unmatched by wood pulp paper.
